As a mother of two taking a holistic approach to parenting was determined to find an alternative to diaper ointment. It was an unfortunate day I found my cure because I also found my cure to drying out poison ivy! A dermatologist told me to treat my ivy with oat paste and it worked! I figured if oatmeal was good for poison ivy, it would be good for diaper rash and it worked better than anything on the market!
Step 1:
Find oat flour at your local grocery store or heatlhfood store. I usually find it in the baking section and sometimes the gluten free section (depending on the brand). If you cannot find it, you can simply grind up oats in a coffee grinder.
Step 2: Put about 1/2 cup into a small bowl. Add water and mix to a paste consistency.
Step 3: Apply to the rash and leave it on for about 10-20 minutes. You can reapply during this time and add water to keep it from drying out. I usually do this in the bathtub and let them crawl around which helps keep things clean and the babies happy. If your baby cannot crawl, lay baby on a water proof mat and apply.
Step 4: As the time moves on, slowly add warm water to the bathtub creating an oatmeal bath for the baby. I add more oatmeal. Depending on the rash, it could be a little or a lot. I really do not have this down to a science but I know I am generous.
Step 5: Enjoy a soothing oatmeal bath!
